THE REST,

but no cars.

1972 Simson

Schwalbe inspired

This work presents a 1972 Simson Schwalbe from an unusual vantage point: a strict 90-degree top-down view. Cropped and partially revealed, the moped appears fragmented and reduced, gradually dissolving into a graphic composition. The iconic green body remains a key visual anchor, while its physical presence gives way to abstraction.

Balancing between photorealism and illustration, the image strips the Schwalbe of motion and narrative, transforming it into a calm, almost meditative object. Light, shadow, and surface texture become compositional elements, shifting the focus from function to form and memory.

The piece bridges nostalgia and contemporary visual language. A symbol of everyday East German design history is removed from its practical context and reimagined as a graphic icon. The Schwalbe is no longer merely a vehicle, but an idea—reduced to color, geometry, and atmosphere, timeless yet firmly rooted in its era.
